Opposition playing politics during floods: Cong
New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) The Congress today charged the Opposition with playing politics at a time of suffering caused by floods in many parts of the country and called upon them not to mislead the nation and divert the attention of those who want to focus on the calamity.
''While there is national sufering, the Opposition continues to engage in political drama in obstructing Parliament and flogging the non-issues,'' Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here.
''Whether it is a question of diverting the attention on Natwar Singh, boycott of the Lok Sabha, loss of productive time in Parliament or attacking the Constitutional heads, the Opposition is showing utter irresponsibility,'' he said.
Stating that such ''national drama'' was non-productive, Mr Singhvi said, ''Let us not reduce the national tragedy into a national comedy. ''The suffering of humanity knew no politics and colour. Every Indian should provide succour, he added.
As far as the Congress was concerned, it would be the last to think of politics during human suffering, he said and charged that misleading statements were being made about floods in Gujarat, where lakhs of cusecs of water was released in one go from the Okai dam.
One could imagine the effect of such an action, he said.
About the financial assistance to tide over floods, Mr Singhvi said the Government had always been non-discriminatory in extending relief.
