Multi-layered security at Nedumbassery International Airport

Kochi, Aug 10: Following a high alert from the Centre, a 'multi-layered' security arrangement is being introduced at the Nedumbassery International Airport, near here, to prevent any terror attacks on the vital installation.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is in charge of security at the airport, will shortly introduce the new measures, which will include 'naka' checkpoints, zigzag barriers and plain clothed 'terminal marshals' in addition to 'quick reaction teams' and closed circuit televisions.

CISF Commandant K C Suresh Kumar told UNI the 'terminal marshals', who would be deployed soon, would be CISF sharpshooters in mufti. They would mingle among passengers and visitors to the airport.

Armed with modern weapons such as AK-47 rifles, these marshals would be a key link in the revamped security arrangements, he said.

''The Centre has directed all airports to standardise their security operations. We are initiating these measures in line with the Centre's directive. Also, in view of Independence Day celebrations next week, closer coordination will be in force with the airport authorities and the local police,'' Mr Kumar said.

The existing quick reaction teams would be further strengthened.

Also, CCTVs had already been installed at vital points to keep an eye on movements at the airport.

As part of the new drill, security measures at the cargo centre would also be revamped. A major component of this would be the 'three colour sticker system' under which perishable cargo would carry red stickers, x-ray checked items would bear orange stickers and goods needing physical verificiation would carry green stickers.

''The Aviation Security Group of the CISF will gradually take over the screening of the cargo, which is presently being handled by airport staff,'' Mr Kumar added.
