Srinagar, Aug 10 (UNI) A 19-member Jammu and Kashmir Police Mountaineering Expedition Team today left to scale 7140-meter high Nun peak situated 85 km South of Kargil in Ladakh region.
Nun Peak is highest feature in Zanaskar Range of Suru region which presents formidable challenge to the climbers.
The Mountaineering Expedition team of Jammu and Kashmir Police is likely to accomplish this mission in September this year.
Last year, this team has successfully scaled Stock Kangri Peak situated in Ladakh region and all these mountaineering expeditions are prelude to accomplish successfully the '' Mission Everest', Which the Jammu and Kashmir Police aspires to scale by the year 2008-2009.
Director General of Police, Gopal Sharma said that the purpose of this expedition is besides, attracting local youth to come forward and take part in adventure sports.
He said that the goal to scale the might Mount Everest will be hopefully accomplished within next two years.
The Director General of Police said in the first phase the Jammu and Kashmir Police has drawn 100 jawans from the Armed Police and were trained in the basic course of mountaineering under the aegis of Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Pahalgam in two batches. 40 jawans who secured 'A' Grade in the advance course and 20 of them subsequently participated last year in scaling the stock Kangri.
