JK converted into a police state: Hurriyat

Srinagar, Aug 10: The moderate Hurriyat Conference, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, today alleged that Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into a ''police state'' and blamed Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for escalation of violence in the Valley.

In a statement here, senior Hurriyat leader and Mirwaiz's spokesman advocate Shahid-ul-Islam alleged that Mr Azad has given a free hand to troops to the security forces in Kashmir.

''Since Azad took over the reins of the state, the security forces have surpassed all limits in commiting atrocities and violating the human rights,'' he added.

Shahid-ul-Islam said tall claims of zero tolerance were being made in the state Assembly, but these turn out to be null and void outside the House.

Citing killing of a youth by the CRPF troops at Dalgate yesterday, he alleged that Jammu and Kashmir has been converted into a police state.

''This is a place where the security forces avenge killing of their colleagues by gunning down innocent civilians,'' he alleged.

''A CRPF Commandant in Dalgate had explicitly told the people that he would avenge the killing of his two men on August one and yesterday they (personnel) carried out the threat by killing a student,'' the senior Hurriyat leader alleged.

The Hurriyat described the incident as ''barbarism'' and asked the people to get united in raising their voice against such ''atrocities and dastardly acts''.
