Japanese Encephalitis toll at 47
Gorakhpur, Aug 10 (UNI) The deadly Japanese Encephalitis (JE) toll in Uttar Pradesh has reached 47 with the death of two more children today.
Last year, JE had claimed more than 1,000 lives in Uttar Pradesh alone.
Joint director health D P Mishra said the inflow of JE patients continued unabated at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College here.
Since April this year, a total of 329 people -- including 12 fresh cases -- sufferring from the disease have been admitted to the medical college, of which 55 are still under treatment.
The patients belong to Gorakhpur, Deoria, Maharajganj, Sant Kabirnagar, Kushinagar, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Gonda and Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. Some cases also pertain to the adjoining districts of Bihar.
The endemic afflicts eastern Uttar Pradesh during monsoons every year.
