HC anticipatory bail to Municipal Council chief, 4 others

Chennai, Aug 10 (UNI) Madras High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Villupuram Municipal Council Chairman and four other members belonging to the AIADMK, who apprehended arrest in connection with an alleged incident of violence on August three during the council meeting.

Mr Justice K N Basha granted anticipatory bail to Villupuram Municipal Council Chairman S S Paneerselvam and Councillors A Noormohammed, A Kamuruddin, P Balaguru and K Prabu on the condition they stayed in Tiruchirapalli and reported before the Tiruchirapalli Fort Police Station at 1030 hrs everyday for two weeks.

According to petitioners, on August three, 2006, DMK and Congress members indulged in violence causing grievous injury to Mr Prabu with an intention to create panic and cause disturbance during council proceedings.

Mr Prabu was initially admitted to the General Hospital at Vellore and later shifted to PIMS Hospital at Pondicherry for better treatment.

On a complaint from Prabu, the police, without booking the real offenders, registered the complaint for minor offences with the ulterior motive to save the offenders.

However, surprisingly, the police preferred to register counter case against them for offences under Section 147, 148, 323, 324, 307 of the IPC, the petitioners added.
