Geelani, 6 leaders of Muslim League arrested
Srinagar, Aug 10: Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and six leaders of Muslim League were today taken into preventive custody in the Kashmir valley, official sources said.
A group of Mulsim League activists today took out a procession from Gaw Kadal near here in protest against the killing of a student at Dalgate. However, when they reached Regal Chowk, six of them, including Masarat Alam were taken into custody and lodged in police station Kothibagh.
Mr Geelani was arrested at Mirgund, about 16 km from here when he was on his way to Bandipora, according to the sources.
A spokesman of the HC told UNI that Mr Geelani was to lead the Nimaz Jehazah of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a final year student of Amar Singh College, allegedly killed by security forces at Dalgate yesterday.
He said Mr Geelani was stopped by a police party at Mirgund and detained in the police station there.
''The killing of Sheikh has exposed the claims of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, about the improvement in the Human Rights violations being committed by the security forces in the valley,'' the spokesman said.
