Fishermen observe hartal in northern Kerala

Kozhikode, Aug 10 (UNI) Traditional fishermen in the Northern region of Kerala today observed a hartal along the coastal areas in protest against the decision to enhance trawling ban in the state.

According to police sources, all the major fish markets in the area remained closed in the dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Fishermen Coordination Committee against the Supreme Court order extending trawling ban from 45 to 60 days.

In Kozhikode, hundreds of fishermen took out a march to the District Collectorate demanding cancellation of the extension order causing traffic snarl at certain areas.

The police said the hartal was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the region.
