Dumping of chinese silk hurting Indian industry

New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) CPI(M) member Moinul Hassan in the Rajya Sabha today cautioned the government against the dumping of silk especially from China which he said is hurting the domestic industry.

Mr Hassan said silk culture was an important sector especially in the rural areas giving employment to many. ''There is a need to improve silkworm seeds,'' Mr Hassan said after the Central Silk Board, (Amendment) Bill, 2005 was moved in the house by Minister of State for Textiles E V K Elangovan.

Mr Hassan said expert committee members should be increased to enable silk industry to be represented better.

He said the Bill should also set up a registration committee. He pointed out that West Bengal, the third highest silk producing state, should be given a boost especially the famed Murshidabad variety.

Deputy Chairman P J Kurien then decided to take the discussion on the 'long pending' bill tomorrow despite requests from Congress member Jairam Ramesh to continue with the same.
