Death toll in AP touches 108; Five die in rains in J-K

New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) The death toll in Andra Pradesh in floods reached 108 today as five people, including three members of a family, died due to rain-related incidents in Jammu region.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh tomorrow to make personal assessment of the situation caused by floods.

Two houses collapsed in Apati village after a landslide in Maharashtra following heavy rains while flood water in Surat city receded after flooding the entire city for nearly last four-days.

To take stock of the situation in Surat, Congress president Sonia Gandhi along with Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and other officials visited the flood affected areas.

In Andhra Pradesh with the recovery of bodies of people earlier reported missing in Visakhapatnam the death toll reached 108.

Over 1.50 lakh of 2.70 lakh affected families were still housed in 537 relief camps even as the level in the Godavari slowly started receding from the peak mark.

In Maharashtra two houses collapsed in Apati village after a landslide occurred at Jambhalewadi hamlet in Panchala 'tehsil' of the district of the state following heavy rains in the area.

The people trapped in the houses were evacuated, sources said and added that no one was injured in the incident.

Flood water in Surat city in Gujarat receded today after flooding the entire city for nearly last four-days.

With the receding water levels in heavily submerged areas, ranging from 5 to 20 feet for last four-day, the authorities are moving in with large quantities of relief and food materials to the affected areas.

At least five persons, including three members of a family died due to rain-related incidents in Jammu region during the past 24 hours, official sources said today.

Three member of the family of one Noor Mohammad Shan died when his house collapsed in Goila-Kahara village at Thathari tehsil of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir in the wee hours today.

Meanwhile, two people were washed away in the Chajjar in Mendhar and Surankote of Poonch district last night.
