Another Pakistani girl 'gets well' after eye surgery

Chennai, Aug 10 (UNI) An eight year-old Pakistani girl born with a congenital eye condition called 'Ptosis' was successfully operated upon to correct the problem at a private hospital here today.

The girl, Umme Kulsoom's parents Abdul Rashid and mother Shazia Rashid brought her to the Rajan Eye Care Hospital here to consult Dr Raghavan Sampath, who is one of the few eye surgeons in the world who can peform the complicated surgery.

'Ptosis' is a rare eye ailment characterised by drooping eyelids.

The girl's eyelids would to fully droop when she opened her mouth.

She also had defective vision in the left eye due to another condition called 'amblyopia' or 'lazy eye'.

The three-hour long surgery involved removing the abnormal muscle for the left upper eye lid, normal tissue from the right upper lid, taking a strip of tissue from the thigh and using it to elevate both the upper eye lids, according to Dr Sampath.

A relieved Abdul Rashid said after the surgery that he felt absolutely at home in India and that he took a liking to Chennai city.

Umme was the second Pakistani child to be treated by Dr Raghavan's team, hospital sources said.
