Ahead of PM's visit, situation worsens in Krishna basin

Hyderabad, Aug 10 (UNI) Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit, the toll in flood fury in Andhra Pradesh rose to 108 today even as Krishna tributary Bheema in Karnataka brought fresh flood threat to the Krishna basin in the state.

After an aerial survey of the flood ravaged Adilabad district tomorrow, the Prime Minister, whose visit comes close on the heels of the whirlwind tour by Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, will hold a review of the worst floods after 1953 and 1986.

A flood alert sounded along the course of river Krishna, as a huge quantity of 5.46 lakh cusecs of flood water was discharged from Srisailam and 5.18 lakh cusecs from Nagarjunasagar, Diaster Management Additional Commissioner Priyadarshini told UNI here tonight.

As many as 8000 people living by the banks of the river were shifted to camps, she added.

The discharge from Nagarjunasagar was likely to go up further to 5.20 lakhs later tonight, a report from Vijayawada quoting Krishna District Collector Navin Mittal said.
