239 Indians lodged in British jails: Govt
New Delhi, Aug 10: There are 239 Indians presently lodged in British jails for various petty crimes, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said today.
They have been imprisoned for involvement in violence, sexual offence, robbery and burglary, fraud and forgery, violation of traffic rules and drug offences.
Mr Ahamed told the Rajya Sabha during question hour that the British government had been approached to furnish details of the Indians kept in open jails.
He said there were no reports of discrimination against women criminals. In reply to another question, the minister said over 6,000 Indians were lodged in jails of 43 countries.
