Sarpanches empowered to prevent child marriages in Haryana

Kaithal, Aug 9 (UNI) To check the menace of child marriages the Haryana government has designated the sarpanches of villages and presidents of civic bodies in the towns as Bal Vivah Rodhak Adhikari or child marriage prevention officers.

Giving this information to mediapersons here today, Deputy Commissioner Rajinder Kataria said that in enforcing the provisions of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act 1929, the village sarpanches and presidents of civic bodies will have the powers to stall any child marriage in their respective areas.

They will also form committees in their areas to maintain a record of any child marriage taking place and send information to the senior officials of the district .

The DC said that the Child Development Project officer and Block Development Panchayat officers (BDPO) will also work in liaison with the sarpanches and the civic body presidents to prevent child marriages. The action taken report in each such case will be forwarded to the National Women Commission .
