Remark on treatment of transport workers leads to furore
Chennai, Aug 9 (UNI) A remark by a ruling DMK member over the way the State Transport Corporation workers were treated during the previous regime, led to furore in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today.
Participating in the debate on the demand for grants for Transport Department, Mr T Senguttuvan said the State transport Corporation was ruined and the transport employees were 'virtually raped' during the previous AIADMK regime, triggering instantaneous protests from the main Opposition AIADMK.
The AIADMK members, who were on their feet, objected to it, leading to noisy scenes.
Former Transport Minister R Viswanathan said the remark was aimed at denigrating the transport workers.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition O Panneerselvam and AIADMK whip K A Sengottaiyan also objected on the remark.
Coming to the defence of Mr Senguttuvan, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi intervened and said while the Opposition member, the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had remarked that the transport department handled by him (Ponmudi) during the erstwhile DMK regime was akin to ''a garland in the hands of a monkey''.
There was nothing wrong in the remark of Mr Senguttuvan. ''When we were in the Opposition we faced such abuses. When the member only pointed out how the department functioned during the AIADMK regime, why are you objecting'', Mr Ponmudi asked.
