Out-of-turn promotions to UP policemen

Lucknow, Aug 9 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh Police team, which gunned down Chambal's dreaded outlaw Saleem Gujjar and his paramour Gita Jatav in an encounter in Auraiyya district today, have been rewarded with out-of-turn promotions.

The state government also announced a cash reward of Rs 1.5 lakh to it, in addition to the Rs one lakh announced on the head of Saleem.

The slain dacoit carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Addressing newsmen here this evening, UP secretary home S K Agarwal said DIG (Kanpur) Daljit Chaudhary, who supervised this operation, would be given a citation. The government will consider rewarding him also.

The 10-member police team comprised three police inspectors Arun Kumar Singh, V P Singh and Santosh Singh, besides three sub inspectors, two head constables and two constables -- Sanjay Kumar Gupta, Yatindra Kumar Sharma, Rajendra Nagar, Rajesh Kumar, Ravindra Babu, Rajesh Shukla and Rajesh Tiwari.
