Major fire mishap averted at Income Tax office
Chennai, Aug 9: Thanks to the timely action by fire service personnel, a major fire mishap was averted at the Income Tax office here this morning.
Fire service sources said, fire broke out in the record room on the second floor in the annexe building at around 0800 hrs. On being alerted by the Income Tax personnel, fire services swung into action and put out the fire within minutes, before it spread to other departments.
On being alerted at 8.27 hrs, three fire tenders rushed to the IT office and put out the fire in less than 30 minutes, under the direct supervision of Divisional Fire Officer (DFO) V Vijayakumar and Assistant DFO M Gajendran, the sources said.
''The record room was pretty hot when we reached. Thanks to the timely alert by the IT people and less traffic, we reached the spot within minutes and avoided a major mishap,'' Mr Gajendran said when contacted by UNI.
He said some old records were kept at the record room and the cause for the fire was being investigated. Senior IT officials, including Income Tax Commissioner visited the spot.
Senior IT official J Albert told a private TV channel that some old records were kept in the room and the department was verifying about the records destroyed in the fire.
