Labour MP quits over U S refuelling in Scotland

LONDON, Aug 9 (Reuters) A Labour member of parliament resigned his post on the parliamentary defence team today in protest at the government's decision to allow U S planes carrying munitions to Israel to refuel in Scotland.

Jim Sheridan, MP for the Scottish seat of Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said he was quitting as Parliamentary Private Secretary of the defence team, a junior government post below ministerial level.

''I can no longer support the government position of calling for restraint on both sides of the current conflict in Lebanon while in my view facilitating the refuelling of aircraft (carrying) real weapons of mass destruction,'' Sheridan told Sky News.
