Flood situation still grim in Kolhapur even as rains abate

Kolhapur, Aug 9 (UNI) Although rains have abated in Kolhapur and Sangli districts since last evening, the flood situation continues to be grim even today.

A majority of the dams are filled upto their capacity and continuous rains have resulted in discharge of surplus water in river beds.

A flood-like situation has arisen for people along the banks of Panchaganga, Krishna, Warna rivers in the region, district collector office sources said today.

Large number of villages have lost road connectivity due to flood water. The situation in flood-affected Shirol tehsil has remained unchanged and four villages have been marooned since the past two weeks. Rescue operation are underway with the use of boats.

Panchaganga river is flowing today at the height of 45.1 feet, two feet above the danger mark at Rajaram weir near Kasaba Bavada suburb, sources said and added that the district recorded 924.1 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours ending at 0800 hrs this morning in which highest of 170 mm was recorded in Gaganbavada tehsil.

Krishna river is flowing today at the height of 48 feet, three feet above the danger mark of 45 feet near Sangli city bridge, Sangli district collector office spokesman said. Flood situation on the banks of Krishan and Warna rivers is still the same.
