Employees defer strike, Central Bank to remain open tomorrow

New Delhi, Aug 9 (UNI) A two-day strike called by unions in the Central Bank of India was today deferred to later this month in view of heavy rains in many states.

According to the All India Central Bank Employees Congress, the strike -- over demands relating to transfers and policies towards workers and officers etc -- has been postponed from August 10-11 to August 22-23 because of the calamity in large parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Normal life of the people, including bank employees, has been affected in these regions. Moreover, urgent relief measures were being disbursed to distressed farmers through the bank in Vidarbha, office bearers of the United Forum of Central Bank Unions said in a statement.

''Hence units and members are requested to work in the branches on August 10 and 11 and observe strike on August 22 and 23,'' the statement said.

All other agitational programmes such as withdrawal of cooperation, demonstration, badge-wearing etc would continue, it added.
