Amritsar, Aug 9 (UNI) A group of Akali activists and Nihangs today allegedly attacked the performers of two small time orchestra parties at Baba Bakala, who were performing at a mela on the occasion of 'Rakhi Purinma', over obscene dance movements.

The performers, including the girls, were manhandled by the attakers. The police reached the scene and had to restore to a minor lathi-charge, in which seven to eight people received minor injuries.

The shows were stopped after the attack and the performers were asked to leave the town immediately.

Ms Mamta, one of the dance girls, claimed that they had obtained permission from the Deputy Commissioner for the show and the police should have given them the protection.

The Akali activists, on the other hand, said they took objection to the performance as ''Rakhi Purnima' was a religious function which was celebrated in the town very year.
