Crime committed during militancy comes to light after 15 yrs

Hoshiarpur, Aug 9 (UNI) A case has been registered against Police constable Amarjit Singh posted at PCR here and an unidentified accomplice for extorting Rs one lakh from one Joginder Singh during period of militancy, Police said today.

According to the police sources, Joginder Singh said that in 1991 two unidentified Sikh youths came to his residence and ordered him at gun point to arrange Rs one lakh as demanded by the 'Singhs' (terrorists). Showing him a list of his family members and relatives they said he and his family members would be eliminated if he failed to arrange the cash.

Singh did not report the matter to the police then in fear. After 10 days, the two youths came to his residence and took away the amount.

However, in his complaint Mr Joginder said when he came to the District Court last Saturday, he saw a policeman named Amarjit Singh who he recognised as one of the youths who had extorted the money from him 15 years ago.

Police registered a case last evening under section 384 of the IPC against the police constable. SP Darshanjit Singh Dhindsa told UNI that a case had been registered and the constable would be arrested shortly.
