Chennai, Aug 9 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today handed over to Assembly Speaker R Avudaiyappan files related to alleged irregularities by former Speaker K Kalimuthu in allotting contracts to run canteens on the premises of the MLAs hostel here.

He also requested the Speaker to show the files to leaders of all legislature parties and announce in the House whether his charge against the former Speaker was true or not.

Earlier, PMK floor leader G K Mani, raising a point of order, stated that Mr Kalimuthu had issued statements that the Chief Minister would have tampered with files to make the charge against him. Mr Karunanidhi should inform the people of the truth, he urged.

Mr Karunanidhi, showing the files to the House, said one K V R Mani, who was running a canteen on the hostel premises, wrote to the Speaker to renew his contract, which expired on February 3, 2002.

He also offered to pay 2.63 lakh rupees per year to the Government.

Mr Kalimuthu in a written order, directed that Mr Mani could be permitted to run the canteen for a monthly rent of Rs 2,750, he said. While Mr Mani was prepared to pay 2.63 lakh rupees the former Speaker had settled for just Rs 33,000 per year, he said.

In another case too, Mr Kalimuthu awarded a contract for a yearly rent of Rs 60,000 per year, overlooking an offer of Rs 11.80 lakh.

He caused a revenue loss to the Government of Rs 44.80 lakh in the last four years, he added.

Mr Karunanidhi said he had referred to the issue in the House not to attack any individual, but in the general interest.

Mr Avudaiyappan said leaders of legislature parties could peruse the files at his chambers, after which he would give his ruling.
