Tenements for 1.12 lakh poor families

Chennai, Aug 8 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government will provide tenements to about 1.12 lakh families of pavement and slum dwellers at a cost of Rs 1,856 crore under the Centre's Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, State Housing and Slum Clearance Minister Suba Thangavelan told the Assembly today.

Replying to a query by K Srinivasan (AIADMK) during Question Hour, he said the project would be completed by 2013 with 50 per cent assistance from the Centre and the state contributing an equal sum.

Stating that apartments would be constructed for pavement dwellers and for those residing in hutments without any basic amenities, he said 22,430 families in semi-urban areas with population below ten lakh would also be benefited by the project.

Earlier, Mr Srinivasan wanted to know if the Government would take any steps to construct tenements for pavement dwellers in Wall Tax Road here, through the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
