One swept away in swollen Mutha river in Pune

Pune, Aug 8 (UNI) One person was swept away in the swollen Mutha river here even as the unrelenting rains continued to lash the district for the fifth consecutive day today.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) deputy commissioner in charge of flood control Anil Gaikwad told UNI that two persons were engaged in washing their vehicle when they, along with the vehicle, were swept away. One of them managed to break the window panes and swim to safety but the other person was swept away and is yet to be traced.

Yesterday, two cadets of the National Defence Academy (NDA) were swept away while undergoing a navigation and map-reading training in the Donge village near the Khadakwasla dam.

Mr Gaikwad informed that 569 families, who had been evacuated due to the flooding, have returned back to their homes with the flood waters receding today.

Around 27,889 cusecs of water are being released from the Khadwasala dam. The discharge from other dams at present was dams Varasgaon -- 3337 cusecs, Panset -- 2933 cusecs, Pavna -- 4881 cusecs and Mulshi -- 15000 cusecs.

Vehicular traffic on the Pune-Mumbai expressway and the old highway was running uninterrupted but slow, according to highway police control room. Trains are running as per schedule, Central Railways PRO Y K Singh said.
