MPHC takes cognisance of mishap insurance scam
Jabalpur, Aug 8 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notices to the district police after taking cognisance of an electronic media report regarding a scam wherein nine impoverished persons' body parts were severed over the past six months and then ''accident insurance claims'' were settled.
Chief Justice Anang Kumar Pattnaik and Justice Suresh Chandra Sinho yesterday issued notices to the SP, Jabalpur; divisional manager, United Insurance Company, Jabalpur and the MD, Suvidha Hospital, Jabalpur. Responses have to be submitted by August 24.
After having suffered minor mishaps, the patients at the hospital were threatened and a part of a limb amputated.
The accused, who presented the cases as automobile accidents, would even assure princely amounts to the victims. Once the claims were settled, the ill-gotten gains were shared by the doctor, agent, insurance official and the police.
Interestingly, all the cases were treated by the same physician and all the 'mishaps' took place in the same area.
