India to have highest number of heart diseases in future: BMBHRC

Kolkata, Aug 8 (UNI) India will have highest number of heart diseases in the country and globally in near future if people do not change their lifestyles, BMBHRC Deputy Director Dr Anil Mishra said here today.

Speaking at a health awareness programme organised by the B M Birla Heart Research Centre on 'World Senior Citizen's Day,' Dr Mishra said, ''The number of heart patients are growing rapidly in the country and it is an alarming situation for India in next 10 to 20 years. The risk will increase if people do not change their lifestyles and food habits.'' He advised people to ensure healthy lifestyle by simple intervertions such as proper food, ample physical exercise, yoga, avoidance of tobacco and alchohol.

He also said the people, who stay slim, usually have a low risk of developing heart diseases.

City's Sheriff Dr Amal Chakraborty said it is an important for the senior citizens to lead their lives with independence and dignity.

''We have asked the state government to begin the medical insurance scheme for the senior citizens in both district and rural areas, he added.

Mr M L Pachisia, a member of the BMBHRC managing committee, said that the aim of the health awareness programme was to empower and encourage senior citizens to lead confident lives and educating them about aging.

BMBHRC COO Suyash Borar said, ''Speedy recovery does not depend only on medication. The patients could lead fruitful lives through our sincere efforts.'' UNI AKM JYN SS1434
