Gangtok, Aug 8: The Centre has given financial approval for construction of power transmission line between lower Lagyap hydel project and Nathu La.

Official sources here said the Union Government approved Rs 2598.71 lakh under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool Resources for construction of 132 kv transmission line.

The need for the power line arose after Nathu La, a part of the ancient silk route, was reopened for border trade between India and China around a month ago.

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling had submitted a proposal for construction of the transmission line to the Planning Commission Chairman in July this year.

Mr Chamling during his visit to Delhi called on Minister for Development of North Eastern Region P R Kyandiah recently and submitted 26 proposals amounting to Rs 68.43 crore and requested the minister for their early clearance.

The Chief Minister also requested the Union Minister to exercise his good office to ensure reservation of seats for the Limboo and Tamang Communities in the state assembly.

The two communities have been demanding reservation of seats after they were accorded ST status in 2002.

Sources here said Mr Kyndiah assured the Chief Minister that the issue would be taken up with the ministers concerned and all efforts made to solve the problem.
