Video conferencing launched in Meghalaya

Shillong, Aug 7 (UNI) To speed up the decision-making process, all seven district headquarters in Meghalaya and the chief minister's office here would be connected by video conferencing.

Minister in-Charge of Information Technology R G Lyngdoh formally inaugurated the video conferencing facility in a function held here in the North Eastern Council (NEC) Secretariat auditorium today.

''The decision making process would quicken and be accurate.

Moreover, the time and cost would be reduced with the help of video conference and benefit the common man,'' Mr Lyngdoh said during the inauguration.

Highlighting the progress made by Information Technology, he said the communication system had developed from delivery of mail by a postman sitting on horseback to video conferences. This, he added, has minimised time and distance.

On the North Eastern region, Lyngdoh said, the development of Information Technology would boost career prospects of youths in the region as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centres can easily set up their offices if basic infrastructures were in place.

After the formal inauguration, Sampath Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, communicating through the system, thanked the National Informatics Centre(NIC) for developing the system.
