TN to take steps to increase number of districts
Chennai, Aug 7 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the Assembly today that steps would be taken soon for formation of 39 districts in the state, on the basis of Lok Sabha constituencies.
Replying to a question raised by CPI floor leader V Sivapunniyam, he said the suggestion given by the member in this regard was worth considering and the Government would soon implement it.
Mr Sivapunniyam cited practical difficulties in utilising MP Local Area Development Funds as some Lok Sabha constituencies fell under two districts. So, the Government should form 39 districts on the basis of LS constituencies, he suggested.
Earlier, Mr C Govindasamy (CPI-M) asked if the Government would take steps to form a separate district with Tiruppur as headquarters.
Mr Karunanidhi replied that the request would be considered when big districts were bifurcated for administrative reasons.
The state presently has 30 districts.
