Fire in Kashmir's industrial area; property worth crores lost

Srinagar, Aug 7 (UNI) A major fire broke out in an industrial area here last evening in which three units were completely destroyed, resulting in loss of crores of rupees, official sources said today.

Ten water tenders struggled for about three hours to control the blaze.

District Fire Officer Sajjad Ahmad Khan told UNI that the blaze started from a transformer manufacturing unit, Al Karam in Sanat Nagar area, which had a large stock of highly inflammable oil.

The fire soon engulfed the adjoining units - ALBK, also manufacturing transformers, and Bhat Rolling Shutters.

Firemen had to face a lot of problem in dousing the flames as there was no water source in the area.

''We then drew water from a canal which is about two km from the industrial area,'' Mr Khan said.

Due to the commendable action of the firemen, he said the fire was and prevented from spreading further, he added.

The cause of the fire was believed to be short circuit.
