Dr Ambedkar all India hockey tourney from tomorrow

Pune, Aug 7 (UNI) The stage is all set for the inaugural Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial All India Hockey tournament being hosted by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corpoartion (PCMC) under the aegis of the Maharashtra Hockey Association (MHA) at the newly laid Astroturf stadium in Pimpri near here from tomorrow.

Tournament director Ikram Khan, who is also the MHA joint secretary, said Kerala will lock horns with Hyderabad in the inaugural fixture tomorrow.

The opening match will be followed by a clash between Tamilnadu XI and Indian Navy, while hosts Maharashtra will take on Karnataka XI. In another match on the opening day, Madhya Bharat will meet Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF)-sanctioned tournament features a total of 18 teams from across the country including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IPCL), Bhopal XI, Delhi, MEG Bangalore, Indian Navy, Kolkata XI and Madhya Bharat XI which boasts of many past and present Olympians and international veterans.

PCMC mayor Mangala Kadam and deputy mayor Gautam Chabookshwar said that the tournament was originally scheduled to be held in May last but owing to unavoidable circumstances, it had to be postponed.

Mr Chabookshwar said the winners will be awarded a prize money of Rs 31,000 plus a glittering gold trophy. The runner-up and the third-placed team will receive Rs 22,000 and Rs 11,000 respectively.

Cash awards will also be offered to the ''Man of the Tournament'', the highest goal scorer, and ''Man of the Match'' for every match.

The IHF has appointed former international Puran Singh Mann of Railways as the chief technical delegate who will be making the appointments of the six national umpires deputed to supervise the tournament.
