APHRC directs govt to ban sale of soft drinks in eduinstitutions

Hyderabad, Augu 7 (UNI)Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission today directed the state government to ban the sale of all soft drinks in educational institutions.

Taking suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports that some of the colas had high level of pesticides, the commission issued the directive to the Civil Supplies Commissioner.

Sale of soft drinks in educational institutions had already been banned in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat.

Commission Chairman Mr Justice Subhashan Reddy said if necessary the commission members would visit soft drink manufacturing units.

Meanwhile, Jana Vignana Samiti, an NGO submitted a memorandum to the commission seeking a ban on the sale of soft drinks.

Talking to mediapersons here, Finance and Health Minister K Rosaiah said the government would take a decision on clamping a ban on soft drinks tomorrow.
