UP to have cyber-police station

Lucknow, Aug 6 (UNI) Taking view of the increasing cyber crimes the Uttar Pradesh police is mooting the idea of establishing a 'cyber-police station' in Lucknow covering the entire state following the pattern of Karnataka.

A presentation in this regard had been made by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the police, the nodal wing to monitor and investigate cyber crimes. The presentation was made before the UP Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh.

The presentation was based on the study of the prevailing system in Karanataka where the cyber-police station was established vide a notification in 2001, Inspector General of Police (Crime), Praveen Singh told UNI here today.

The proposal which is being sent to the state government envisages the creation of new post of Superintedent of Police (SP), cyber crime and his office to be considered as the police station.

Despite the south Indian states taking the lead in this regard, UP would be the first north Indian state to set up a cyber-police station.

Mr U K Bansal, the IG , EOW in his presentation suggested that all the cyber crimes, registered in any police station should be transferred to the cyber police station for investigation.

Another notable feature of the proposal would be an important notification which would be aimed at regularising the functioning of cyber-cafes form where usually the net-related crimes originate.

Under the proposal , owners of the cyber cafe would be mandatorily asked to allow only those to surf the net who have proper identity proof with them.

In case of absence of ID proof of the users, the owner of the cyber-cafe should make proper entry of the person. The cyber cafe owners would be asked to register photographs of the users by a web cam and keep it for record purposes.

Mr Singh said establishing the police station would not require large funds and it could be done immediately after the government approved the same.

The exercise gained momentum recently after several cases of net duping had come to light here in the recent past.
