Tennis-Davydenko battles to victory in Polish Open
SOPOT, Poland, Aug 6 (Reuters) Russian top seed Nikolay Davydenko captured his second title of the season with a 7-6 5-7 6-4 win over unseeded German Florian Mayer in the Polish Open final today.
Davydenko squandered two match points in the second set as Mayer stormed back from a set and 5-1 down to take the match into a decider.
The world number six proved to be too strong in the third and pocketed the ,200 first prize after eventually winning the longest final in the tournament's 15-year history.
''I put all the energy I had into this final. I did all I could to win,'' said Davydenko.
''I've lost two finals this year and I wanted to even up the score.'' Mayer admitted he simply ran out of steam by the end of the two hour 34 minute contest.
''After the second set, I believed that I could win,'' Mayer, ranked 60th in the world, told reporters.
''But I was too tired and Davydenko simply turned out to be the better player.'' REUTERS LL RK2335
