Manipur CM unhappy about mass exodus of students

Imphal, Aug 06 (UNI) Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has said that in most government and private colleges, the teacher-student ratio was almost 1:2.

The Chief Minister said yesterday that the reasons for the decline in numbers of students were due to disturbance in academic career.

There were too many strikes, bandhs in the state, the Chief Minister said. Throughout the entire August the protestors call strikes.

The Chief Minister further said the government was losing revenue due to huge exodus of students.

The government was trying to improve the education system in the state and teachers would be appointed from primary to higher level.

Education Minister L.Nandakumar said the appointments would be done by the Manipur Public Service Commission and hence it would take some time to complete the recruitment process.

Earlier two teachers, who were office bearers of All Manipur Government Aided College Teachers' Association (AMGACTA), were beaten up by suspected militants for resorting to strike.

The Chief Minister said the government could not fulfil the demands of the AMGACTA as there were no more students in the colleges.

The AMGACTA has opposed intervention by militants and beating up of two teachers.

The organisation has also called a 48-hour general strike from August 10 midnight.
