ICAI to conduct Common Proficiency Test for aspirants

Bellary, Aug 6 (UNI) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will introduce a Common Proficiency Test (CPT) on the lines of the the Common Entrance Test being held for students aspiring to join medical and technical students.

Informing this to reporters here today after inaugurating the two-day state-level Continuing Professional Education (CPE) conference, ICAI New Delhi President T N Manoharan said the first CPT would be held on November 12 for which the draft scheme for new curriculum had been notified by the Centre. The entire CPT would be on objective basis for 200 marks.

He said the government had constituted the Government Accounting Standards Advisory Board (GASAB) in view of transforming of government accounting from cash to accrual system.

Mr Manoharan said the Union Urban Development Ministry had decided that the government level technical committee to be constituted under its aegis would recommend the state government to accept the accounting standard issued by ICAI.

He said for the successful implementation of the fiscal legislation, the ICAI would train the excise and service tax officers of the revenue department to help them understand financial statements and audit techniques. The training would be held in metros between August and September.

Mr Manoharan said efforts were on to establish centres of excellence to take up research activities, provide training and organise workshops for the members in emerging areas and give impetus to academic activities. The centres would be established in New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

He said the ICAI was formulating a dress code for its members which would be applicable when they represent any statutory proceedings and official meetings.

Earlier addressing the conference, organised by Bellary CPE chapter of Southern India Regional Committee (SIRC) of ICAI, he said the objective of CPE was to upgrade the latest developments and advancement in accountancy which had become a global proficiency.

Mr Manoharan said the vision of chartered accountants had now totally changed with time to time introduction of new avenues. They were in great demand abroad where about 10,000 CAs had been employed by international companies. Besides 15 chapters of ICAI was functioning abroad.
