FIR filed against killing of a dog in Mizoram
Aizawl, Aug 6 (UNI) An FIR has been filed with Mizoram police against an Excise department driver, for mercilessly killing a pet dog of one of his neighbours here.
This was the first time a case has been registered against killing of a domestic animal in the state.
Police said following a money dispute, the accused, Thanglura went to Thangthuami, a 70-year-old widow's residence located at Chawnpui locality in the captical city and chopped the dog lying on the floor with a knife.
The dog later succumbed to injuries.
Animal rights activist C Luri, on the advice of whom the pet owner filed the FIR, said the action of accused was not only an attempt to murder, but an act of terrorism against a helpless mother and her daughter as well as a show of cruelty to an animal.
''Animals also have rights which need to be protected. There have been many cases of cruelty to animals in the state, particularly to pet dogs, which had gone unattended. From now on, every step will be taken to protect the animal rights,'' she said.
She was also emphatic that the culprit should not go unpunished.
