Easterlies provide relief from humidity, mercury drops to 33 deg C

New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) A fresh wave of easterly winds today provided relief to people of Delhi from the hot and humid conditions of the last few days even as thick clouds indicated possibility of some rain in the coming days.

The high speed easterlies led to a drop in the mercury to 33 degrees Celsius, from 35 degrees C yesterday.

The minimum temperature too dropped to 26 degrees C, from 27 degrees C yesterday.

An overcast sky welcomeds Delhiites early this morning. The clouds, coupled with the easterly winds, brought relief from the sultry conditions prevailing here since the last few days.

The sudden coolness in the weather is due to the westerwards movement of the monsoon system.

''The depression over Vidarbha has moved slightly westwards, weakened into a well marked low pressure area and lay over Vidarbha adjoining southwest Madhya Pradesh at 1730 IST of yesterday. It now lies over southwest Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood. The system is likely to move further in a west-northwesterly direction,''the weather office said.

Under its influence isolated heavy to very falls were likely over West Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Rajasthan and neighbouring areas in the next few days.

In fact, the met office said rain and thundershowers were likely at many places over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and other areas of North West India, including Delhi.

The weather office has forecast a few spells of rain and thundershowers in some areas of Delhi during the next 24 hours.

After last week's heavy showers, which saw the capital recieve the heaviest spell of Monsoon rains last Wednesday, this week has witnessed lull in rainfall activity, barring a short burst of heavy showers on Monday night and a sudden burst of heavy showers on Thursday afternoon.

Consequently, the capital has this week witnessed sunny days interspersed with cloudy weather, resulting in constant rise in mercury. The rise in mercury, coupled with high humidity levels, have left Delhiites perspiring under the sultry weather conditions.
