Water level at Sardar Sarovar Dam crosses danger mark
Jhabua, MP, Aug 5 (UNI) At least 12 villages were submerged and 18 huts washed away after water level at the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river crossed the danger mark due to incessant rainfall for the past two days in this western Madhya Pradesh district.
Kathiwada town turned out to be the wettest place in the district recording 56 inches rainfall so far. Last year, 49 inches rainfall was recorded in the town.
Collector Rajkumar Pathak said water level crossed danger mark of 119 metre and reached 119.42 metre.
As the water level was on the rise, 29 villages in the submergence zone were evacuated and 184 families shifted to safer places. No loss of life was reported but 'jowar' crops suffered damages.
Mr Pathak said about 15-20 people associated with the Narmada agitation refused to relocate and had reached higher regions. These people were being advised to shift to safer place.
The Chandrashekhar project dam's reservoir has attained full-tank level and bridges were submerged. The district administration has alerted people.
Udaygarh received maximum 146 mm rainfall overnight, while Rama received 70 mm, Patelvad (63), Jhabua (41), Ranapur (40), Meghnagar (29) and Kathiwada (30).
