MRCC appreciates govt move of tax exemption to Mumbai blast victims

Mumbai, Aug 5 (UNI) The Mumbai Regional Congress Committee has appreciated the government's approval of their demand of tax exemption to compensation received by the Mumbai bomb blasts victims.

MRCC president Gurudas Kamat said, ''We have received large number of representations in this regard hence the issue was taken up at New Delhi that such compensation received by anyone due to a blast or a calamity across the country including those affected in the recent bomb blast should not be taxed.'' Mr Kamat thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidamabaram for having accepted the demand of the Congress and others in this regard.

Yesterday, the government had decided that the amounts received or receivable by an individual or by the spouse or legal heirs of an individual by way of compensation on account of any disaster from the Central, any State Government or any local authority shall not be subjected to tax.

Nearly 187 people died and over 817 injured, of which about 200 were seriously injured in the recent Mumbai blasts.
