DUSU elections: EVMs to be used for first time

New Delhi, Aug 5: Doing away with antiquated ballot papers, the Delhi University has decided to go high-tech and will be using electronic voting machines(EVMs) for the first time in its students' union elections this year.

Though there is a restriction on candidates on putting up posters for the elections, slated to be held on Septemeber 8, the Elections Advisory Committee of the university has decided to propose EVMs for the elections to make the election procedure simpler and to bring transparency in it.

The limit of the expenditure by the candidates for the elections has also been decided to raise from the current Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000.

According to University Proctor and Chief Election Officer Gurmeet Singh, these two proposals have been sent to the university management and the Delhi Government for their final nod.

The university has also decided to prohibit candidates from putting up their posters anywhere on the campus. But a 'Wall of Democracy' has been provided to them where they all have the right to put up their posters during canvassing in the elections.

A recommendation for buying 800 EVMs has been made to the university management and the Delhi government and they both will be providing all help in it, Mr Singh added.

The committee has also sent a proposal regarding a ban on those students who fail the exams or seek readmission just for the purpose of contesting the university elections.
