2000 students march for peace on Hiroshima Day
Mumbai, Aug 5 (UNI) Citizens Of Mumbai including students today marched from Azad Maidan to Hutatma Chowk in South Mumbai to commemorate Hiroshima Day on the occasion of marking the anniversary of the devastation of Hiroshima with an atom bomb during World War-II.
NSS volunteers from the Mumbai and SNDT Universities along with members from the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, Hindustani Prachar Sabha workers and other citizens rallied with placards against nuclear weapons depicting slogans like 'We want bread, not bombs' and 'No Nuclear Weapons'.
While some students had painted their faces black and white with slogans, many also wore T-shirts with such statements.
The group ended the march at Hutatma Chowk, where they all pledged 'to work tirelessly for complete elimination of nuclear weapons.' They also aimed to unite people from across the world, irrespective of religion, nationality, class or caste in this noble task.
In view of the devastation that occured after the bombing on Hiroshima on August 5, 1945 and Nagasaki on August nine the same year, killing lakhs of people and crippling thousands apart from the radiations claiming lives of three lakh people over the years, the students also pledged to participate in all efforts to preserve mankind from these horrible dangers.
''The main idea behind the peace march is to make people aware of the horrors and meaning of nuclear weapons,'' said Mr T R K Somaiya of the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal.
The youngsters, who are the future of our world, also pledged to do everything in their power to see that there will be no repetition of another Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
