WHO Goodwill Ambassador Yohei Sasakawa visits leprosy centre

New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) WHO officials led by its Goodwill Ambassador Yohei Sasakawa visited leprosy centre Satya Jeevan Kushat Ashram in the capital.

Mr Sasakawa, who was also President of Japan's biggest NGO Nippon Foundation, was accompanied by State Leprosy Officer, Regional Officer, WHO Global Media Advisor and members of the NGO, besides officials of WHO regional office here.

The delegation was taken through houses at the centre that had started to collapse or had developed cracks with sinking of earth after heavy rains last month, Federation of Leprosy Organisation President Brahm Dutt said in a statement.

They were also informed that Delhi Chief Minister had asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to relocate the centre and an informal decision was also taken to allot the Ashram land near Madanpur Khadar village in South Delhi, but things did not move further allegedly because of paucity of funds.

Mr Sasakawa assured to donate funds to relocate/reconstruct the centre.

Earlier, many social activists, NGOs and corporates, including English firm Fortel Construction that had donated Rs two lakh.
