Sonia sanctions Rs one lakh to party cadre's family

Chennai, Aug 4 (UNI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave a solatium of Rs one lakh to the family of a party functionary who died of heart attack while returning after paying homage to Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sriperumbudur on May 21.

Porur Councillor G Kannan was returning home after visiting the Rajiv Memorial at suburban Sriperumbudur, when he suffered a massive heart attack and died on way to hospital.

After TNCC President M Krishnasamy took up the matter with the high command, Ms Gandhi sent the relief to Ms Chinthamani Kannan and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family.

In a statement here, Mr Krishnasamy, thanking the party leader for the timely help, said he had recommended solatium only ten days ago and without any delay, Ms Gandhi sent the relief.

"I thank Ms Gandhi on behalf of the TNCC," he said.
