Smoke from the earth creates panic in Mizoram

Aizawl, Aug 4 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the Bawngkawn area in the capital city today when suddendly smoke started emanating from the earth.

Initially, the people thought a volcano was about to erupt.

Putting all speculation to rest, Geology&Mining wing joint director Dr Lallenmawia said there was no reason to believe volcanoes are present in the state.

''However, here is a geological plate about 65 kms below the surface here, there is no danger of volcanoes erupting. Because the core of the earth is seething inferno, heat sometimes escape to the surface. But this is a natural phenomenon and there is nothing to be worried about,'' he said.

After initial investigation police said that the smoke might have been caused by a short circuit in the earthing of an electric cable under the ground.
