Reservation policy must be brought in private sectors: Bagchi

Kolkata, Aug 4 (UNI) Reservation policy for the SC, ST and OBC should be implemented in the private institutions and non-governmental organisations, Economist Professor Amiya Bagchi said here today.

Speaking in a seminar on 'Justification of Reservation in the present socio-economic context,' organised by All India SC/ST/OBC Employees' Co-ordination Council of Indian Statistical Institute, Mr Bagchi said, ''The reservation policy should be implemented in non-governmental sectors, apart from government sectors, because these colleges are run with the help of charitable trusts and they enjoy various tax benefits from the government.'' The elite students of the country get admitted in the private institutions because they are capable of paying huge admission charges but the SC, ST and OBC students were deprived of availing these opportunities, he said.

Former West Bengal School Education and Madrasah Minister Kanti Biswas also said that the reservation policy was needed in our country but it should also ensure that merit of the students, irrespective of caste, creed and religions, were not denied.
