NESAC warns NE states to maintain ecological balance

Aizawl, Aug 4 (UNI) North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) warned NE states to maintain ecological balance, predicting a major natural catastrophe is due in the region and it can hit at any moment in any form.

Reviewing the disaster preparedness in NE region, NESAC Director K C Bhattacharjee opined it is urgent need to be more careful to take steps for mitigation loss of property and human causality due to landslide, flash flood and earthquake.

Growing trend of forest encroachment, poor planning, population explosion, contamination of ground water and harnessing minerals are posing serious threat to the region, which increased the risk of earthquake, Mr Bhattacharjee told UNI.

Mr Bhattacharjee said that North Eastern Council (NEC) has taken initiative to set up network of V-Sate to collect and disseminate information about natural calamity including tremor in all eight states of northeast including Sikkim.

Meanwhile, altogether 11 telemedicine units with transferable V-Sate are working in the region while NESAC is working on a plan to start 20 more units to tackle the possible natural disaster.

More over, NESAC is preparing a plan for hazard prone areas of the region and peruse of it's adoption but everything depends upon the concerned state governments, Mr Bhattacharjee added.
