Monsoon fury: Heavy discharges from Krishna, Godavari in AP

Hyderabad, Aug 4 (UNI) A flood alert was sounded along River Krishna in Andhra Pradesh as a whopping 5.03 lakh cusecs were released from Srisailam and 3.38 lakh cusecs from Nagarjunasagar Reservoir today in view of heavy inflows from reservoirs in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

As the level in Godavari increased following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas upstream a huge ten lakh cusecs were discharged from Dwaleswaram Barrage, officials said.

Since the catchment areas of the river in Maharashtra continued to receive heavy rainfall, Karanataka released 3.50 lakh cusecs from Almatti and 3.32 lakh cusecs from Narayanpur.

More than 3,500 people living near the banks of the river in Vijayawada and other places were evacuated anticipating fresh floods from upper reaches, Disaster Management Commissioner Debabratha Kanta told UNI here.

Maintaining the level at 1,034 feet in Jurala, the entry point of River Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, the entire inflow of 4.50 lakh was discharged downstream.
