Bangalore, Aug 4 (UNI) The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has identified as many as 85 roads for widening to ease traffic congestion in the city, its Commissioner K Jairaj informed today.

Delivering the keynote address at a seminar on 'Transfer of Development Rights (TDRs)', jointly organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) and Karnataka Ownership Apartment Promoters' Association here, he said the BMP authorities were under tremendous pressure from the State Government to widen roads in the city by the year-end.

Mr Jairaj said that in the first phase, the BMP would widen a 140-km stretch on 12 arterial roads, including Bellary Road, Palace Road, Nrupatunga Road, Jayamahal Road, Kasturba Road and Sheshadri Road. The acquisition of land for the purpose would be from private parties (25 per cent), the State Government (38), Union Government (13) and Defence (24). Talks were on in an advanced stage with the Union Government and Defence Ministry to acquire the land.

He said the State Government had asked the BMP to popularise the concept of TDRs and acquire the requisite lands from private owners.

The TDR concept had gained popularity in Chennai and Mumbai, he pointed out, exuding confidence that it would get good response from land owners who stand to lose their property here too.

Mr Jairaj said the BMP had recommended the State Government to bring in certain amendments to the Karnataka Town Planning Act and invoke certain provisions to make TDRs more popular and acceptable.

Only 18 land owners have come forward to get TDRs.

FKCCI President R C Purohit and BMP senior officials were present on the occaison.
